Despite bitterly cold temperatures several fishermen ventured onto Trout River Saturday morning to try to spear eels through the ice. The recreational eel spearing season, which opened on Dec 20, ends on Sunday, Jan 29.

The big melt hit Stanley Bridge late Tuesday night and early Wednesday (Jan. 25) morning. Across the Island heavy winds and freezing rain clinging to power lines and turning roads, laneways and driveways into skating rinks caused power outages for more than 1,100 Maritime Electric customers, most in central and western PEI. Parts of the Rattenbury were flooded with melting water, while a fresh coat of ice was added to the Stanley River.
Schools, public events and gatherings were cancelled all across the Island today.

So you’re out walking and you see something in the Great Outdoors that looks out of place and you think maybe it’s an invasive insect or plant. If only you had a photo and some information handy to check it out. But you remember, hey, ya, I actually do! These remarkable key chains were being handed out at the Winter Woodlot Tour (Jan 21) on Clyde Road, near Hazel Grove. If you see one be sure to pick it up. It might come in handy on your next nature walk.

Leigh Adams, who lives in Kensington, got the shock of his life when he walked into the local Bakin’ Donuts on January 19 and saw this poster. A towering giant of English literature, William Golding, could almost be his Doppelganger, except for the minor detail of his passing in 1993.
